Ciaran Richards’ father was a soldier. A hero.
But now he’s dead. Or is he?
Strong, independent and divorced Marcie Kane is on a much needed vacation in Tanzania, Africa when her enjoyment of everything the country has to offer is shattered by one simple question posed by a teenage girl: "When are you taking me to America?" Harmless as it may seem, Marcie realizes that this question posed to the wrong person could spell disaster for the girl and her friend. Marcie's fears prove to be well founded. When she discovers the girls are victims of an international human trafficking ring in, of all places, her home state of Florida, her attempts to help quickly spiral out of control with terrifying consequences. Will any of them make it out alive?
Barry Finlay takes on a big subject in A Perilous Question and distils it down to a powerful thought provoking read. A thriller is always more arresting when it involves plausible characters doing plausible things, rather than clichéd archetypes, and one of the main virtues of Finlay’s novel is its uncompromising honesty. He hasn’t just plucked a harrowing subject out of thin air and spun a story around it, it’s clear he’s done his research and absorbed the moral quagmire of human trafficking. His narratives tension, which is considerable, depends on human nature and because of his understanding of the central subject he delivers a potentially convoluted story with pristine clarity. Take it for granted that the suspense continues throughout and as the pages turn it becomes even more exciting. In the main, this is down to strong idiosyncratic characters. Marcie Kane is perfectly pitched, but she’s not sentimentalized and this above all has a lasting impact as the hopelessness of Human Trafficking is brought home.
