A failing marriage. A union separated by distance. An accidental encounter. Can the Edinburgh Fringe Festival work its magic? Kathy’s life is a mess. Sure, the job’s great and her home is to-die-for, but she spends way too much time on the midnight train to catch a few fraught hours with her musician husband, Jimmy. While he’s away, Dan-next-door looks dangerously attractive.
On paper, Jimmy has it all. A talented wife, a successful rock band and nights in smart hotels. The gig at Edinburgh’s hottest arts festival is the culmination of years on the road, but the lack of harmony in his marriage makes him feel like a failure. He and Kathy fight to stay together, but events conspire to break them apart as they interact with colourful characters drawn to the Fringe.
In this rock-music-inspired tale, three love stories intertwine as each player is forced to take stock of their lives and discover what is truly important.
A vibrant and compelling novella that weaves three thought-provoking and original stories, Don’t Stop Believing wonderfully captures the complexities, failings and contradictions that often obscure the path ahead as Green weaves acerbic prose with melodic musings to create a gem of a narrative. Bittersweet and transient, hope, fears, love and regret, all have their place, with each underscored by her musical references which will certainly find favour with many of her readers. More, it brings a relaxed fun feel to Green’s storyline which will certainly solicit many smiles without overstating her theme. Novellas can be a bit hit and miss as word count often leads to plot points that feel too forced and obvious to the reader but here Green gets it just right. Avoiding unnecessary complexity and detail, with each storyline carried on deftly nuanced characters. The underpinnings of her plot threads are exactly where they need to be and as a result, we quickly find ourselves rooting for them. Set upon a common path, their thoughts proving timely revelations that will leave many readers reflecting on our universal need for belonging, love and happiness.
A highly enjoyable gem of a read, Don't Stop Believing, An Upbeat Musical Journey is recommended without reservation.
