Romance, and political intrigue
where secrets can be deadly.
“Family Secrets” crept into Alexis’s life
when she wasn’t paying attention.
Alexis has had big dreams all her life, and she’s worked hard to make them happen! After college, she married and had a beautiful baby boy, living her dream as “Mommy” until Colton was safely entrenched in grade school. She lands her dream job at NASA, and her supportive husband, Jay, takes the lead on raising their son. The perfect family, right?
Twelve years later with no warning and no reason, Jay commits suicide. Colton goes into denial and blames his mother; Alexis buries herself in her work.
Seven months later, Alexis’s biggest dream comes true. She’s going to be on the next space shuttle! Her victory is short-lived when she finds out she has breast cancer. As her health declines, Colton delves into the dangerous circumstances of his father’s death. Will she and her son ever find out the truth? Or is it too late?
An enthralling read that masterfully avoids the contrivance of undue complexity, Family Secrets is Book 1 in the Secrets and Second Chances series from Donna M. Zadunajsky and it proves an emotive tale. As the title suggests, protagonists Alexis and Colton are hobbled by secrets that threaten to undo them. It’s certainly an atmospheric read and heavy at times as Zadunajsky takes her readers on a rich journey that spans multiple genres. It’s about the darkness that can permeate our lives, and how we each can choose to bow to that pressure or stand up to the challenge it presents. A story that might well have proved mawkish in the hands of a less confident author, Zadunajsky brings a certain radiance to her story as she takes her readers into a maelstrom of the unexpected with a well-conceived plot and the benefit of an acerbic pen, whilst reciprocity of compassion between her characters endows her narrative with a reflective perspective that will leave few readers untouched.
Compelling and highly satisfying, Family Secrets has all the hallmarks of a popular series and is recommended without reservation.
