From the outside looking in, Elizabeth had the perfect life. She had a family who loved her, numerous friends, and a successful career. No one knew the hurt, pain, and angst she hid inside, struggling to keep herself small so that those around her would still like her. It all came to a head on October 23, 2007, when her parents received a call that she was lying lifeless in the ICU in a hospital in Utah -- "You better get out here, your daughter is not going to make it." Fractured: My Journey Back From Death and the Lessons I've Learned Along the Way is the memoir of Elizabeth's recovery, spiritually, physically, mentally, and emotionally. It is about her deliberate decision to begin the hard work finding and using her voice and the struggle to break out of the box that society tried to keep her in. This is the story of what happens when one woman stared death in the face and decided to make a conscious choice not to go back to sleep, but to wake up and live the life she knew she was meant to live.
Powerfully poignant and deeply intimate, Antonucci’s autobiography proves a truly emotive and thought provoking powerhouse of a read. From anorexia and sexual assault to a fatal car crash her journey towards self-acceptance and personal growth proves both enlightening and incredibly inspirational. Unflinching in its honesty, it’s clear from the start that there’s a sharp and enquiring mind at work as her prose recount pivotal events in her life. There’s no grandstanding, no saccharine attempt at drama, or sense of contrived complications and at times it can prove a harrowing read. Her life was spiralling down into its final chapter and she not only wants us to understand why but more importantly how she felt. On this level, it’s uncompromising and incredibly moving as we become utterly absorbed in Antonucci’s struggles. This is the kind of unfettered and nakedly expressive writing we rarely find and further underlines its significance. It reminds us of what we can achieve and the seemingly insurmountable obstacles we can overcome when we face our fears and learn how to conquer them and as such will serve as life-changing inspiration to many of Antonucci’s readers.
Words to return to again and again, No doubt Fractured: My Journey Back from Death and the Lessons I've Learned Along the Way is recommended without reservation.
