Jaytanie delivers another
scintillating new five star series......
Facing extinction, the Metal-Horned Unicorns of MarBryn are desperate for hope. Any hope. So when the Oracle reveals the prophecy promising just that, the remaining members of the tribe pin their future on the birth of a young foal. Hope becomes despair when the baby unicorn is born without metal. . .because without metal there is no magic. And without magic, this little blue newborn has no chance to defeat the evil sorcerer that has imprisoned all of MarBryn. Magh’s rule proves both harsh and brutal and by the time Blue comes of age there are only twelve metal-horns left in all of MarBryn. Eleven can claim some form of metal based magic. . .but one must get by on sheer grit, will, and the desire to avenge his parents untimely deaths. Like most of the metal-horns, Blue disregards the prophecy as nonsense, but driven by his insecurities, he covertly trains for a fight he’s ill-equipped to win.And then hope comes back around. But can a unicorn with no metal no magic answer the call of fate?
Our review............................
There are so many wonderful fantasy books to choose from that it’s really quite hard to sort the wheat from the chaff, but Sybrina Durant has created something truly original. With Blue, Gaiso and Ghel (to name but a few) instantly rendered in our imaginations, she hits the ground running with an exhilarating, magical adventure which exudes the traditional sense of wonderment we have come to expect from the best in the genre. Alumna, the Unicorn Oracle has seen Blue’s future but for a unicorn born with no metal it’s a dangerous path for Blue to follow and there are many obstacles in his way. Not least of which is the evil sorcerer Magh whose dark soul he must ultimately destroy. Travelling through the stunningly realised landscape of MarBryn in his quest to receive the powers of the Moon-Star Spirit Durant brings wit and a compelling level of suspense that makes for an absorbing narrative, but it’s the depth she brings to her characters that makes Journey To Osm such a special read. Rich and lavishly nuanced each one brings something unique to her story and lingers in the imagination as she takes us from Halstable to Muzika Woods. And that’s when the magic moves to yet another level!
A wonderful start to a superb fantasy read which will appeal to readers of all ages Durant has delivered a corker of novel and Journey To Osm is highly recommended.
