If they do stay together, will they ever find love and happiness again?
Karen has it all: a handsome husband, beautiful twin daughters, a lovely home and a great job. Karen also has a secret; she’s cheating on her husband, with not one man, but two. On the outside her life seems perfect, but on the inside Karen feels neglected, bored and unappreciated. Out of fear of losing her husband and breaking up her family, Karen ends the affairs but things don’t turn out how she planned. When Karen’s dirty secrets are revealed she must fight to keep her family together. Chris is doing all he can to hold his marriage together. He loves Karen but she grows more distant every day and when he accidentally takes her cell phone what he finds changes their lives forever. When tragedy strikes, Karen must decide if she should sacrifice her happiness for her husband’s love, and Chris wonders if he should stay with Karen because he still loves her despite her infidelity. Sexy and relatable, insightful and inspiring, Love and Happiness shows us both sides of Chris and Karen's story, and reminds us that sometimes to have it all, you must first lose it all.
A profound and insightful story, Ben Burgess turns a sharp and far-seeing eye on the hard-edged realities of infidelity in his new novel, Love and Happiness. An addictive read with breathtakingly acute observations and fine prose, Burgess confidently propels his narrative through the alternating perspectives of Chris and Karen. It’s austere at times, but benefits from a timely injection of levity and superb structure whilst satisfyingly tight dialogue ensures its fundamental theme remains on track. Yes, there are a few clichés to be found, but these are offset by primarily flawed protagonists and their distorted perspectives as Burgess explores emotions most often masked in everyday life. The plot twists may not come as a huge surprise, but there’s no need for shock value when the writing is this good. Burgess simply has a great story to tell and he does so with enviable refinement as he leads readers towards a logical and satiating denouement.
An all-round page turner, Love and Happiness is sure to be well received by fans of Burgess whilst attracting an ever growing interest in his books. It is recommended without reservation.
