When Will The Slaughter End?
Honored as an Award-Winning Finalist in the "True Crime: Non Fiction" category of the 2014 USA Best Book Awards, Buccaneer is the stimulating, true account of the life and times of Jack Reed, an All-American boy turned drug smuggler; turned Robinson Crusoe, then infamous prison inmate. For the first time, Jack Reed discloses his extraordinary, tabooed journey as a high flying international cocaine smuggler and personal pilot for Carlos Lehder, partner to Pablo Escobar of the infamous Medellin Cartel. Reed flew drug runs for Lehder who handled transportation, while Colombian drug lord Escobar handled production and supply. Lehder's cocaine transport empire was based at Norman's Cay, an out island 210 miles off the Florida coast in the Bahamas. Having gained notoriety in the late 70s as a staging point for drug smuggling, Norman's Cay was immortalized in Blow a 2001 motion picture starring Johnny Depp.
A sterling read that intrigues from the first page, Buccaneer by Jack Carlton Reed and MayCay Beeler is sure to grab the attention of true crime aficionados. Well-paced and engaging, Reed and Beeler have stayed true to the genre to deliver an engaging and well-paced read that ably avoids the proverbial gilding of the lily. This is the edgy realism of a side of life often reserved for the silver screen. It’s heart-breaking, hopeful, depressing, and shocking at times, but it’s always tempered by the knowledge that millions of lives have been irrevocably marred by addiction and the poignancy of this sad truth remains an ever present undertone upon which to reflect. By his own admission Reed would have gladly done it all again. A statement that smacks of hedonistic disregard for the consequences of his actions, but his life makes for a fascinating read and in Beeler’s highly capable hands there is depth and a certain appreciation of the addictive nature of adventure.
Undeniably well written, certainly hard hitting, Buccaneer is a considerably reflective read that will leave readers deep in thought. A must for fans of this ever popular genre it is recommended without reservation, whilst BookViral has no hesitation in naming MayCay Beeler our fifth ever author of choice.
