With an abundance of shamefully unoriginal YA books flooding the market, it is always uplifting to come across a gem like Outshine, by author Nola Decker. A rather intriguing mystery with a SF bias, Decker cleverly weaves the thread of her intriguing plot from the alternating perspectives of her main protagonists, Jessa and Gabe. Each distinctly original, she certainly understands her audience and ably captures the personas of her young characters through well observed dialogue and timely expression, with the ever present thematic qualities of perseverance, courage and determination to the fore. They are, of course, common devices in a YA novel, but Decker adds notable depth to her tale with subtle social commentary on the evolution of genetic engineering. It’s woven into the foreshadowing of darker events, even in the book’s happiest moments, encouraging the more inquisitive of her readers to consider the implications of an ever evolving science.
Well-crafted and entertaining, Outshine makes for an engaging read which rightly raises high expectations for future novels by Nola Decker. It is certainly recommended.
