& A Book You Won't Forget!

Rita found that she could manipulate fire, but her control was deteriorating. Her boyfriend, Wil, just wanted to enjoy being with her. Unfortunately her ‘baggage’ may prove to be too much. Ingrid wanted to help better the relationship between her brother and his foster daughter; Rita. But his paranoid antics were driving everyone crazy. Nikki thought his life was normal only to find that he, Wil, Ingrid and Rita had been living their high school lives over and over for the past eighteen years. Bobby, the cause of all the madness, has run out of time to find a solution to Rita’s problem. He was going to have to give them back their memories in order for them to realize the danger. That was only if he could convince them to over look their hatred for him.

An intriguing tale that adds a refreshing twist on the paranormal, Red Summer is the debut novel from author Antoinette J Houston and it’s something of a page turner. The stuff that lights the imagination, Houston certainly knows how to weave an enthralling and convincing plot. Admirably navigating the deluge of YA science fiction with the emphasis on originality, she delivers her tale with admirable flair through well-crafted dialogue and characters that all but leap off the page. It’s a little complex at times, but never to the detriment of the storyline and whilst the paranormal elements aren’t overplayed, they work wonderfully in the context of the overall theme and character dynamics. Never predictable, Houston keeps the pages turning at a frantic pace with a couple of curve balls to keep her readers on their toes, instinctively taking from the best in genre and making it her own.

For fans of YA paranormal stories, Red Summer is unlikely to disappoint and is certainly deserving of a place on your to read list. It is strongly recommended.
