an enlightening footnote to the
annals of history.
Thebes is the name the Greeks gave to what is now known as Luxor in southern Egypt. When Cleopatra was on the throne, Egypt was fighting a war with Rome that it was destined to lose. Alexandria was the new capital of Egypt but the arcane power of ancient Thebes, where the mummified bodies of its Pharaohs lay in the Valley of the Kings, could not be ignored. In the darkness of an ancient crypt, a High Priestess of Amun with her own ambitions, accidentally releases a demon that brings death and destruction to Thebes and leaves the Gods fighting for their own survival. In the final days of Egypt’s grandeur, the almost impossible task of defeating the demon before it becomes unstoppable, is left to a Roman soldier, a serving girl and a reluctant priest. This is their tale as the Scribe on their shoulder recorded it.
Imaginative and evocative, The Fall Of Thebes is the debut fictional release from author Connie Tindale. An author who refuses to compromise and surely has a bright future ahead of her she delivers a vibrant mix of Egyptian history, myth and metaphors that coalesce into a compelling read. From the very first page you know this is one of those books that demands your full attention to be really appreciated. There is intricacy at play here with attention to detail, creating an immersive sense of time and place whilst Tindale manages the devices of plot to avoid predictability. There’s an underlying commentary that’s hard to deny. At its core is the age old battle between the forces of good and evil. It’s woven into the fabric of Tindale’s characters, driving their moral sense of purpose as they find themselves thrust upon a quest beyond their wildest imaginings.
Original and highly enjoyable, The Fall Of Thebes proves a wonderful debut for Tindale and is recommended without reservation.
